The team is there for the taking, but the City of Portland might not be interested. Oregonlive.com is reporting today that talks between the city and Merritt Paulson ended badly, with Paulson storming out.
Of course Paulson is denying that he threw the temper tantrum, insisting that the meeting was called off by city staff. Both sides are suggesting that the other is playing games to get more in the deal.
It's all a little exhausting. March 11 can't come soon enough really.
But, the news does give pause. Does MLS have a plan if Portland's stadium plan falls through? Would that be the domino that falls that allows the league to consider partial offers in places like Montreal?
Most likely MLS would fall back to plan K (or something like that) and sit tight until Ottawa made a decision on its stadium.
Right now there appears to only be three bids prepared and able to pay the full $40 million. It goes without saying that MLS has a lot riding on next week's vote.

If worse comes to worse it could always be a year they only accept one bid. How would they rationalize making Vancouver pay the full 40 and letting another partial bid get through?
well they could always let Ottawa in as well ...! Now that would be a delightful turn of events, Vancouver and Ottawa in the same year!
