If you said they were the attendance figures for each of the 2009 SuperLiga’s first round games, give yourself a prize!

That prize? A shotgun. To shoot SuperLiga.

Shoot. It. Dead.

No, really, it’s the humane thing to do.

Anyway...if you at all care – and no one does apparently – the tournament’s semis were set last week and they have assured a Mexico – MLS final. New England plays Chicago and UANL plays Quebec’s favourite team Santos Laguna. Both games are on July 15.

I don’t plan to watch.

The games are usually okay to watch, but when you get match ups where both teams play reserves or youth players well, that's kind of like watching the Gold Cup.

I hate wasting everyone's time when the participants aren't even fielding a proper first choice XI. That's not goignt o bring fans and it's going to jade sponsors who were foolish enough to put their money behind this venture ion the first place.

Make gold cup every 4 years while you're at it.

I'm happy to take the minority viewpoint here and say that international tournaments, and particularly SuperLiga with its affiliation with our geographically-affiliated soccer-loving neighbor Mexico, are critical to the development of soccer in the US.

There are things that need tweaking - marketing, scheduling, even the name, but MLS and SUM are dragging US soccer fans kicking and screaming toward the international game and the genuine nationalistic character of the sport.

Lisa,

International competition = good.
SuperLiga = not really an international competition but rather a failing marketing initiative.

The CONCACAF Champions League should have all of the attention. If they want to expand SL to make it a secondary competition open to all CONCACAF countries, I'll listen. But as it stands now? It's awful. The Mexicans hate it and MLS teams aren't even taking it seriously anymore.

Listen to my last podcast.... timely topic.

That is a trick questions because it could also be the attendance figures for FC Dallas.

Duane,

Not considering a tournament with Mexico a valid international competition is an insult to Mexico, a country will a long history and relationship with the US.

Because they are one of our two landlocked neighbors, by nature we have a special relationship with them - yet to be developed as it should. The antipathy between the teams is only further validation of the tournament.

Check this put. Let's say TFC qualifies for this tournament next season. They can disqualify themselves by winning the V-Cup. That'll give organizers only a couple of days to find a replacement. So, what, are they gonna free up dates for TFC's possible replacement if this scenario occurs? And if TFC doesn't win the V-Cup, then the potential replacement will all of a sudden have a 3-week vacation?

I think a redifined superliga might be worthwhile. It can be North America's version of the Europa League. Maybe the Champions of the USL get in to it, and some sort of redefined selection of the MLS and Mexican League teams... perhaps V-Cup runner-up. More competitions is never a bad thing for the development in soccer.

Lisa,
Your reading comprehension skills leave much to be desired.

Count me in with those that hate the Superliga. The tournament is purely a marketing scheme and has no value in terms of competition. The Mexican teams don't care, and coverage of the tournament this year has been almost non-existant. It was a terrible idea to begin with and from the attendance numbers, it hasn't gotten Mexican and Mexican-Americans in the US any more interested in MLS than they were before.

TFC cannot qualify for international competitions through MLS.

Duane Rollins said...

@Tim

They can qualify for SuperLiga since it's not an international competition but rather an invitation MLS/FMF tournament. The question about what they will do with TFC is legitimate since the Canadian CCL spot isn't determined until June and it's, based on play so far, likely that TFC is going to finish in a SuperLiga spot (5-8 overall). I suspect that TFC will simply decline the invite to concentrate on the Canadian championships and CCL (they damn well better qualify for the '10 CCL...).

@3:28. You're right. That Lisa chic is the typical woman who knows nothing about sports, but pretends she does. Then fails miserably.

it matters to you when you're team is in it. True some trophies are worth more than others, but when it's your trophy, it is just as shiny.

I meant 'your', not you are.
