"I'd love to give you a Yes or No. I don't think it's quite that simple. We have a budget for the roof. We're working with Pavco on it. We want to make sure, I'd certainly like it to happen, but I think we have financial obligations we have to meet. We're looking to package that so that it makes sense for all of us in British Columbia. But it will drive significant economic benefits. Some of the costs are higher than I think anyone expected. We're trying to figure out how we can manage that. There is a report that's gone out to the treasury board and they are reviewing that now and the government will be in a position where we can deal with it."
With thanks to a reader's tip, that was B.C. premier Gordon Campbell responding to a caller asking about the retractable roof on Vancouver's CKNW yesterday morning (skip ahead to 26:11 here)
It's a political answer, of course, but it's also telling. It appears that Campbell understands that there are a lot of people in Vancouver and B.C. that want this project to go ahead, but that it is in serious danger. If it is dropped, the power moves back to MLS.
The prevailing opinion is that MLS will not use that power to pull the plug on the MLS Whitecaps.
It's still not a good position to be in.
