Sober Second Thoughts: And so it goes...

You have every right to be angry tonight. After watching TFC lose 5-0 to New York (5-0?!), it’s perfectly understandable if you want to burn BMO Field to the ground. The result was awful. It was painful and it was more than a little surreal. It’s inconceivable that a team could lose that badly – to another team that was that bad – in a game that meant that much (this probably isn’t a good time to point out that the other results TFC needed happened. A win would have put them in).

So, yes, anger is reasonable. It’s probably even healthy. I’m sure there is a lot of anger amongst the players and staff of the Reds right now. It’s not like they wanted to embarrass themselves.

But, I can’t bring myself to be spitting mad. No, I’m sad. I’m sad because I know what kind of opportunity a playoff run would have provided Toronto and Canadian soccer fans. I’m sad because I know that a lot of good friends are also sad tonight and I’m sad because another season – we only get so many in our life – is gone. It’s 152 long days before TFC will kick a ball in anger again. That’s more than four months before TFC fans can gather to support the team and to share our passion for this game. It also feels that a limited opportunity for this team to truly break through to the mainstream – not that go-once-a-year-get-loaded-in-the-south-end crowd, but the actual, honest to goodness sports fan -- is gone.

We had DeRo and Julian, Scarborough boys, and no real competition in the city for our attention. Something special could have happened. Instead, it’s a punch line (and we all know there will be plenty of media folks out there tomorrow enjoying their oh-so-hilarious TFC punch lines). Nothing will ever be easy for soccer fans in this city. That’s pretty clear.

So, yeah, as I said, be angry. Punch a wall if you need to. Swear. Whatever. And, then get over yourself.

Supporting a team, especially a football club, is a grind. You don’t do it to secure an invite to the victory party. You do it to connect yourself to a community and to others who share your passion. Sure, you want to see the team win and half the fun is second guessing them, but if you are in it for the glory you might as well stay home and watch Man U on the tube. There are thousands of professional football teams in the world. Very, very few win. Pointing that out doesn’t mean you are giving up on the possibility of your team one day lifting a trophy. Rather, it’s understanding that there are other things about supporting a team that make it worthwhile. It’s understood that it’s difficult to see those things when you are staring at 5-0 win, but they are there.

What I’m saddest about tonight is that it will be four plus months before I can once again gather with the men and women who fill up the south end of BMO Field. In three short years they have become a living, breathing community – lawyers standing beside plumbers, new Canadians beside hopeless hosers. Yes, many of those folks enjoy an adult beverage, but that’s not why they are there. They are there for the football and they are friends because of that. Although the community exists beyond BMO Field – through soccer leagues, Christmas parties, random encounters in a mall, etc. – it’s at its best when it’s a mob attempting to will TFC to victory.

In moments of weakness, I imagine that mob growing disenchanted and walking away. Perhaps a fit of frustration will make them forget how wonderful the experience is and how important the community has become. Maybe, the mob will become blinded by the scoreboard and lose focus on the full picture.

That would be a shame because then they might miss it when the scoreboard one day turns in TFC’s favour. This is a third year club. We shouldn’t forget that. Yes, they could have done more. Yes, we should demand that there is a consequence to losing 5-0 to the worst team in the league. But, we should also remember that there will be another game soon enough.

And it will go on and on and on and on...

I’ll see you at BMO April 17.

Well said Duane, well said. Sadness dominates this morning, but soon my seat on the West Side upper deck will have snow and ice on it and I will smile when I think of green, green grass. I will be counting the days to April 17 along with you.
Changes must be made, but growth in player pride and guts may be something harder to calculate. The better days ahead just might have been forged in the fires of shameful collapse last night. We will discover stronger characters on the field and become better fans ourselves.
I have always been suspect of the putdown form of cheering. Are those who sneer at opponents truly supporting your team. Those who gladly belittle the New York Red Bulls must be aware that they have compounded their own hurt today. I will conjure up some memory magic and try to have the Dichio banner moment be the one that ended the 2009 season on a good note.

can you hear the whole city of Montreal laughing at TFC?

No I can't hear Montreal, Vancouver, or even the half witted Columbus fan on twitter. I can't hear their vitriol at all because they don't matter.
Next season I will still support TFC and hopefully those other 2 Canadian cities will still have teams in a league equal or comparable to the USL.
It's like the retarded child laughing at the straight A student cause they fell in a puddle. One will dry off the other will still be retarded.

You have drunk from the TFC cool-aid, or maybe your just on the payroll.

Rationalize all you want!!! Wanker!!

Can you hear Seattle laughing at you? Because they were "building their team the wrong way" while TFC was "doing it the right way", as every media pundit in Toronto said at the beginning of the year, and now the Sounders are off to the playoffs in their first year while TFC sits on the sidelines yet again. It's just too bad Montreal didn't put in any effort in that final CCL game, because then TFC would have nothing.

Anonymous, you're dead wrong. Yes, Montreal did shit the bed in the Nutrilite, but Toronto still has nothing because they shit the bed in the CCL.

@coxon... are you serious? Using the always popular retarded child analogy?

The only difference between TFC and Montreal / Vancouver is they play in MLS. Wait all of one season and they'll all be on the same field.

This apparent plan to build and get into the playoffs is incredibly embarassing. 5-0 to the worst team in the league... awesome!

Say what you will about Montreal and Vancouver, but at least they made the playoffs and didn't lose to teams like Cleveland and Austin in must-win situations.

Hit a nerve?
Hopefully Montreal will be in the MLS soon but nothing is official yet. I would love to see all 3 Canadian clubs in the MLS.
I'm not on any payroll. I'm from Vancouver and have been to many Whitecaps games. Also MLS Sounders games. Sorry but the leagues are not comparable.
Everyone likes it when the big club falls. Which is odd cause TFC is a 3rd year expansion team that has never made the playoffs. Most likely because they are Toronto based and have huge support.
I would like to see how the Union develop compared to the Sounders. It appears the Union won't have the money Seattle had to sign a DP or a base of an existing USL franchise.
TFC has no excuse for their loss to NYRB. It was horrible. This team should be in the playoffs. There are definitely deficiencies in the club. Hopefully they will be addressed in the coming days.
I guess there will be all kinds of football fans in this country. It's great that the sport is growing. I hope people go to the pitch just as much or more than they flame on the internet.

The Union won't do as well simply because they didn't have years of success as a soccer club before joining MLS. The Sounders, Whitecaps and Impact (if they get a team) will all do well in their first year in MLS simply because unlike TFC, San Jose and the Union, those former USL teams have spent years (and in some cases decades) running successful club sides.

Meh. Big deal. As long as TFC successfully defends the Canadian Championship, everything will be ok.

saying that its ok that tfc did not make the playoffs cause there only a 3rd year team is rediculous and outrageous, seatle did get lucky (very well managed lucky)we had a team that were more than playoff contention, weve had 3 years of incredible support from the fans its time to repay them, i will keep chearing for tfc, but people have to be held accountable for this failure we now have the team its time for the management to smarten up.

Adrian Serioux is useless. Anyone who has watched him play for more than 15 minutes and has a clue about the game knows this.

True. Very true. The 3 year thing was in reference to a the club not having a long history or success to warrant bitter remarks from other clubs fans.
Hopefully somebody will be held accountable not just because of this terrible loss, but many breakdowns in the final 15mins of matches.
Obviously it's not ok TFC didn't make the playoffs. Hence the reaction from TFC fans the last 24 hours.

Personally, I would have loved to see TFC in the post season tourney. I cannot completely figure out what the missing piece for TFC is. IT seems the puzzle is only missing one piece. Is it a conditioning coach? The way the team trailed off at the end of games... or is it just overall mentality. Even though I am quite a Crew fan, it would have been nice to see you Reds in the playoffs.

Next season then!

I've supported TFC since the first day they hit the field, and I find it very disappointing that they didn't make it to the playoffs. I don't think they would have gone far, they just aren't good enough. They had the easiest game of all the teams fighting for the wildcard slot and they just BLEW IT! I can't believe it! They have a lot of talented players, they just can't pull it together. They need to do something to make it work next season.
