The 24th Minute awards - Part II

We are a week away from the second annual 24th Minute awards. I have a pretty good idea where I'm headed with a few of them already, but I'm looking for feedback from you, the readers.

The categories are as follows:

  • The Who are Ya Award (screw-up of the year – can be an individual or a specific event)
  • The If Only Football Was Played On Ice Award (Celebrating the inner hoser of our footballing heroes)
  • Canadian goal of the year (best goal by a Canuck – can be scored anywhere in the world. Purely aesthetic)
  • TFC goal of the year (best goal by a TFC player – aesthetic value as well as importance of the goal factored in)
  • Game of the year (best game played on Canadian soil, or involving a Canadian team)
  • Team of the year (best Canadian team playing at any level)
  • Performance of the year (top performance by a Canadian player. Although most likely to be for a cumulative effort –-i.e. a full season—it can also be for an individual game of even a single goal. Whatever is deemed to be the greatest performance of the year).
  • Person of the Year (the top award given to the individual thought to have made the greatest contribution to the betterment of Canadian soccer during the year -- can be a player, coach, official or fan. Likely Canadian, but not passport restricted)

To that list I am adding one more category: World performance of the year. That award will be the same as the Performance of the Year, except it will go to a non-Canadian.

E-mail me or post in the comments with suggestions for any of the categories. I’d especially love to get some links to goals.

The awards will be announced Dec. 30.

NOTES: You can see last year's winners here.

World performance of the year: USA 2-0 Spain.
As an American, this is an easy pick. Spain is miles ahead of the USA in talent, but somehow the Americans pulled together as a team and ended Spains long undefeated streak. One team is built with players in decent european sides and the MLS. The other has its core of players from Real Madrid, Barca, and the like.

That's on the short list Tim.

Funny little anecdote: I was in London on the day of the final of the Confederations Cup. I walked through the hotel bar about midway through the first half when it was 2-0 USA. There was one person watching (the rest were glued to Wimbledon. Apparently a Scot was having a good run...).

I saw the score and said "Oh my God!" quite loudly. The watcher looked at me and in an American accent said "Yeah, I know."

It was a little soccer moment in the middle of a European adventure.

I didn't swing back to see his reaction after Brazil came back...

best goal all season has to be Gillingham's Simeon Jackson GWG against Shrewsbury Town in the League 2 playoff final at Wembley in injury time. It was an incredible header and I watched the last 10 of the game and knew Jackson was going to get the winner.

The Who Are Ya Award - Dos Santos for fielding the B squad for the Vs Cup final match in Montreal.
The If Only Football Was Played On Ice Award - Paul Stalteri for the FIRST foul that SHOULD have been awarded a penalty in the Gold Cup vs. Honduras. It was purely goonsquad.
Canadian Goal of the Year - Simeon's winner against Shrewsbury Town to gain promotion.
TFC Goal of the Year - DeRo's semi-bicycle kick against Montreal. It really energized the entire team to go on and pull out the near impossible.
Game of the Year - Impact vs. Santos 1st leg. I was standing with UM02 when Eddie headed in the second. The whole stadium went nuts, it was amazing.
Team of the Year - Winnipeg Hellas SC, who won the BMO Club Nationals, did so by overcoming heavily favoured Royal de Beauport of Quebec City. They played with such heart and determination that the trophy had their names on it before the competition even started.
Performance of the Year - Will Johnson for helping to lead RSL to an MLS Cup win, as well as his solid play for Canada at the Gold Cup
Person of the Year - Whoever is responsible for setting up the plan to play 30 - 35 games before WCQ 2012 for the Nats. We've all got our fingers crossed that they'll pull it off, but hell, even if they only hit 20, I'm sure that has to be at least double what they normally get.
