At this point in time I am just focussed on establishing my role as a player with Blackburn. As a young player, I think it is the right thing to do to keep focussed on cementing my role in the starting line-up before thinking about international duty at this point in time.
David Hoilett
Red Nation Online spoke to David Hoilett recently and briefly brought up the elephant in the room – just where is he going to play internationally (and as 19-year-old that is getting starts in the EPL, he’s going to play internationally somewhere). His answers will sound familiar to long-time Canadian fans.
For those unaware of his story, Hoilett was born in Ottawa and played in Canada for much of his youth until he was 16. Then he went to Blackburn, where he fought his way to the first team squad after a stop in Germany on loan with
His case is eerily similar to the de Guzman’s, right down to the fact that there is another brother involved that seems to be leaning towards Canada as an international option. Those close to Janiel Hoilett tell me that he acts, feels and thinks like a Canadian. His international loyalty is only to Canada.
However, those same sources tell me that David is as good as gone. Part of the reason I never write about him is that I already think of him as Jamaican.
It’s absurd, this supporting Canada thing. It’s very difficult to imagine a time when the team is playing up to its abilities when it can’t even convince its own citizens of the value of representing it.
Or, if the players and or their parents hold petty grudges against the provincial programs that cut them. But, here’s the thing. The blame for these disputes shouldn’t fall completely on the player, nor should it fall on the technical staff of the provincial programs. Rather, it’s the system that is sick.
Designed to encourage competition over development, it stand to reason that u14 coaches are cutting small, underage players like Hoilett in favour of larger, more physical players. Screw skill, I’ve got a national championship to chase, the coaches are essentially saying.
None of that justifies turning your back on playing for a country that has provided you with the opportunity and freedom that you need to make it as a pro athlete. But, it helps to explain it.
Hoilett is as good as gone. Sadly, you can mark my words. We’d be best to forget about him and instead try to prevent the next one from happening.

Damnit no! Can't we have a Premiership player recuitment win once in a while??? This continuous fail is demoralizing as hell...
Wait... I think I just suddenly felt the sensation of becoming part of the collective mind of every old, cynical V in the nation.
It's hard to take articles seriously when you can't even spell the name of the person you are writing about.
Anonymous (7:40am) - It's hard to take your comments seriously when you can't even leave a a username on the internet.
Duane - So Hoilett is going to play for Jamaica because his dad is still upset that he was cut from a team 5 years ago? I'd like to know where David went to play after he was cut. Perhaps he then went on to a team that allowed David to get noticed by Blackburn? Perhaps if David had made the team he wouldn't be breaking through in the EPL.
Sounds like a very childish reason to not choose Canada.
Yes, I missed an I. I assume you've never made an error in your life and that you write 15,000 words a week.
it is FAR too early to write off Hoilett.
Ever wonder how Hoilett managed to get his work visa in England without even coming remotely close to earning an NT cap for Canada (or Jamaica's NT)?
Strings have to be pulled to make that happen. I'm not saying that David or his family will appreciate what certain people in Canada have done to help move his career forward but I can tell you with some certainty that without the CSA's help, Junior would still be suiting up for St. Pauli or some other club in Germany because he simply doesn't meet the necessary criteria needed to score a coveted UK Work Visa.
Give Stephen Hart some time to connect with this lad. I'm sure that now that SH is the full time coach, he'll be working hard to woo David into the fold.
However, if the boy decides that NT duty simply doesn't suit him, so be it. It's not going to benefit his career much (he's 19 and getting PT in the EPL....he's gonna be just fine with or without NT duty on his CV)
Choosing Jamaica would be a stupid decision because the Raggae Boys have as small a hope as Canada does of making it to the WC any time soon

I just want to take a moment and thank Mr. "Anonymous" for his totally useless series of tangential posts. There is nothing I enjoy more than reading someone's angry diatribe against poor grammer. Thanks "Anonymous".
Duane, I think you've analysed the conflict at the core of this situation quite accurately, but I'm not sure Hoilett has made any decision yet. Yes, it sounds eerily similar to the quotes from Canada's series of turncoats, but let's not lump Hoilett into that group yet. The onus is on Hart to change Hoilett's...heart?
Oh no, my day is ruined because of spelling mistakes and poor use of grammar!
Sorry to the shrills but journalism has always been about the message you are delivering and not the semantics of the little things you idiots waste your time pointing out. Despite some errors, the points are still well articulated.
A few extra brain cells might have lead you to the conclusion that perfect spelling and grammar is not something you fill find in perfect harmony on a self-proprietary INTERNET BLOG.
What amuses me most about "Pesi the mystic" is that he's raging against bad spelling, while making tons of errors.
