Above is a mock-up of the temporary Empire Stadium that the 'Caps will start the 2011 MLS season at.
It's got grass.
It's intimate.
It has a historical tie-in.
Why are they not just staying again?

It's not downtown.
Game. Set. Match
I can't find the article but I read somewhere that they will be laying the current BC Place fieldturf at Empire, so no grass.
yeah, it doesn't have grass. one of the articles that came out today said they are gonna put field turf in.

here it is.
i also think the looks of this rendering are deceiving. If you examine the BC Lions site they have "sample" pics of similar stadiums.. and you'll see the intention is to have stands made of scaffolding and metal floors. I know people make fun of BMO, but at least it's solid metal beams that allow concourses and washrooms below.
the other problem for soccer is the endzones. no matter how small they make the endzones, there are still going to be big gaps to deal with.
hopefully the caps only need a few games there because it really will look unprofessional I think.
Despite being temporary, it may not look that bad. Here's a link showing examples of temporary stadiums from a company that specializes in that area.

Why not stay there?
1) It's not downtown
2) Not near any of the region's 3 rapid rail lines
3) The land has already been allocated for other uses
