The 24th Minute Awards: World performance of the year

Declan Hill, author/journalist, The Fix

The easy, pleasant thing to do would to name Lionel Messi the performance of the year and be over with it. No one really wants to face the prospect of our sport being fixed after all. The suggestion of it makes us doubt everything and enjoy it just a little bit less.

But, we have to face it. And Declan Hill has made us (and risked his life in doing so). The most important challenge the sport faces is to find a way to deal with match fixing and Hill is the person most responsible for challenging the game's leaders to deal with it. That's a hundred times more important than any goal, or cup win.

Hill happens to be a Canadian too. That is just a happy coincidence. After all, his was a performance worthy of worldwide acknowledgement.

Having got into soccer late , I'd like to believe it's still untouched, uncorrupted but it's not the case . There will always be the doubt , however I'll still believe Barrett tries for every goal .

I concur. Great choice. I had no idea about this issue until "The Fix" and the subsequent investigations by UEFA only drive the point home.
