Bill Archer has a nice little rant up today about TFC's decision to wear a star above the crest during Voyageur Cup games this year.
Hardyharhar look at 'em Canucks. They be so stupid because they think they special because they win a fake tournament. So lame LOL. God Bless America.
Or something like that anyway.
Archer, of course, fails to point out that the crest is only going to be worn during games in the tournament -- you know, the actual event it represents. Rather, he uses the opportunity to suggest that Toronto fans think that winning last year's NCC somehow represents anything of significance to MLS play. He goes on to point out just how pathetic TFC's record has been -- they haven't finished above .500, like, ever! -- and to just basically troll for TFC comment.
(Columbus, by the way, didn't finish above .500 in any of its first three seasons either, but perspective isn't big on Bill's skill set. Rhetoric doesn't stand for balance, after all).
It's pointless to respond to anything that fool writes, but I'm going to make an exception here to defend the idea that it's somehow wrong to care about the V-Cup. Such thinking stinks of the very Eurosnobbery that Bill and his ilk rally against consistently. Only, in this case, it's MLSnobbery. If they don't understand why they do something it must be wrong, is the message.
For those that don't know, the Voyageurs Cup was created by fans in Canada at a time when no one was supporting the club game in this country. The fans raised the money needed to buy a trophy and they did the legwork required to get the clubs to recognize it. Years later, when the CONCACAF Champions League was created, the fans sat back and watched as the little trophy they created was being battled for in front of 20,000 people and a national TV audience.
I'm sorry, but that's a damn cool story and one that does not deserve the pathetic, bitter scorn of American soccer's answer to Bill O'Reilly. No one cares that you don't care Bill. Go back and hide in your hole.
Canadian soccer fans are proud of the V-Cup and they want to celebrate it. And they should. The competition has a far higher profile than the US Open Cup (nothing against this historical and worthwhile competition, but it simply doesn't draw the same way that the V-Cup does right now) and is a driving force behind a revival in the club game here in Canada. If TFC wants to wear a star above its crest to recognize that they won the trophy in 2009, then who the hell is Bill Archer to say that they are wrong.
Once again, TFC is only wearing the star during games in the tournament that it represents.
NOTE: It's been pointed out to me that the CSA mandates the wearing of the star. This is not a TFC initiative.

Suggesting Bill Archer is akin to Bill O'Reilly is just plain wrong.
He is more like Glenn Beck. Insane, racist, moronic, and a joke.
Well said Duane.
The worst part about Archer though, is not that he's an asshat...is that's he's good about being an asshat.
I'm not gonna a lie. I read both bloggers about equally and love that there is some real tension between the two. However, because Duane runs a quality blog as opposed to simply posting an article every now and again I'll give him the upper hand.
and PPP why the Glenn Beck hate? He just tells it like it is.
he gives such a bad name to people from Columbus
I'll admit that the part of me that cheers for ABT FC (Anybody but Toronto) during the Voyageurs Cup matches can see the logic of Archer's post. If the V-Cup were to continue to be a 3-team loop, in 30 years we'd see 3 teams *averaging* 10 stars on their jerseys, which would be a bit silly.
In other words, if you ignore the fact that our current NCC is just a start, and is expected to grow in the future, Archer has a point. So it is up to the CSA and pro soccer investors in this country to prove him wrong.
I'm pretty sure a numbering system can be used so the jersey doesn't look like a birthday cake.
There is nothing stopping US based clubs participating in the US Open Cup from doing the same thing (special USOC unis), except for the fact that MLS clubs don't seem to give a damn about the US Open Cup.
Actually part of your Blogg is inaccurate!!
Archer indicates that he does not know if the star is to be worn for NCC games only or for both League and NCC games.
His assertion is, it doesn't matter, both would be equally pathetic.
Please strive to be a little less misleading!!
I believe you should write a clarification as to what Archer said!
Bill Archer trolling? What a shock!
The Impact had the red NCC star all season last year (even after pathetically losing the title). Toronto could wear it all of this year, regardless of the matches being played.
Clubs around the world have different methods of decorating their jerseys with stars, and in many cases (but not always), it's up to the clubs to decide what stars they put and why.
Sao Paulo FC, for instance, has two gold stars representing the two gold medals (and world records)won by Adhemar Ferreira da Silva in the triple jump in the 1952 Olympics and the 1955 Pan-Am Games. He had been part of the Club. They have othing to do with football, but the club decided to put them on their jersey to honor the athlete. It may be stupid for some, but no one seems to question it in Brazil.
when did you first start hating bill archer?
I think the star is a bit much.
I find it sad and find it funny, that attempts by those living in North America to bring the beautiful game into maturity are downplayed by the likes of Archer et al.....
What a small non-conceptual mind he must really possess. If this is the best that he can wrought upon our landscape, then another chapter in the Idiot's Encyclopedia has been added in his "honour". Yes, Canadians do see and spell things differently, Archer, they really do.
I like the Archer=Beck comparison, pretty accurate. Lord knows ignorance runs amock down there.
Rollins I think you are Bill Archer !!
You have created the ultimate antangonist, Anti Canadian, Ying to your Yang.
Your doing the equivilent of proping up your Blogg hits to increase your popularity!!
I say it now come out of the closet ROLLINS\ARCHER end this farce. It's time to fess up and face the Canadian blogg reading public. Forgiveness starts with you!!
Bill Archer is actually a bot. Much like all their other uniform writers.
It's time to create a Canadian Big Soccer-esque site where good writing is the norm.
Forget good writing, that what newspaper and paperbacks are for, blogging is all about opinion and knowledge, not whether you know when to use an em dash now thats being a snob, thats why I dig Duanes blog its real, I don't personally think he's much of a footballer but he's a good spectator for sure.
The big difference is that Duane and Archer is that Duane is a fairly good writer, where Archer is simply a buffoon. I easily could see Rollins writing for a "traditional" media outlet where Archer would be laughed at simply because he has no writing skill.
I seem to be missing something when did Columbus put a star on there Jersey's for getting in the playoffs, I would also like to point out where does it say that TFC will only wear during NCC? I am sorry if I don't take your word for it.
^ The "something" you seem to be missing is any sense of grammatical form.
If the CSA mandates this star, fine...so be it.
I personally think it is overkill to award any type of star for winning a 3 team tourney, no matter how much I support the V's Cup and hope it continues to prosper. It just feels like the CSA is trying a bit too hard. Make it a true OPEN Cup and then I'm far more ok with it.
Personally, I believe these special designations should only be awarded when a club wins a continental championships or world championships, but that's just me.
BTW...I'd really like to see our neighbours to the south take their Open Cup more seriously as well. The concept is good....it just needs far more corporate and fan support.
What about a star for every 5 victories? It still values the competition, but prevents ridiculous starring all over the place. (It also makes the stars more special.)
This is why teams only wear it the year after they've won the NCC. If you win the Cup again, you get to keep wearing the star, not add another one. If you lose the title, you lose the star.
To follow up on Ben Knight's comments on ICF, the whole point of having one star for ten Seria A victories is so that teams like Juventus don't have 27 stars on their jersey.
Rollins is Bill Archer!!!!
I wish I could remember who said this originally, but it seems appropriate somehow:
"Plus, the majority of bloggers are hobbyists. Calling them "stupid" or "douchebags" or whatever just makes you look like a bully.
You'll note that I'm not saying that you can't attack a blogger's idea. I just find that too many think that the way to do that is to also attack the credibility and intelligence of the writer. Doing so is juvenile.
We write about soccer. Perhaps a little perspective is in order from time to time -- attack ideas, not people."
